Day 3: When Pretending Gets Nutty | Maker Spaces and Design Thinking

Essential Question: How do we create a compassionate community that supports risk-taking, perseverance, and adventure?

MINDFUL MOONSHOT MORNING ROUTINE

The morning began with reflection on the institute so far.  Participants shared "Wows and Wonders"  and recorded them in their journals.

Mindful Moonshot Morning Routine: Activities to Unite, Disengage stress, Connect and Commit.

Junkyard Gangs: Each gang (table) thought of a song to represent their Wows and Wonders.

"Loved building a gang - a supportive community, and being a part of something bigger for the common good." - Participant Feedback

BUILDING COMMUNITY - THIS IS A PEN

This exercise in creativity shows open ended possibilities for creation with found objects, such as a pen.  Participants pass the object around and demonstrate it's use as something other than what it actually is. They must get agreement from the group.

Storytelling and Shadow Puppets

Focus Questions:
How can we build literacy-based maker spaces in our classrooms?
How can we bring aspects of design thinking to our classrooms?

Visual Artist Gowri Savoor, along with Kurt Wootton and Debbi Arseneaux, led this series of three sessions on maker spaces, design thinking and shadow puppets.

VA:Cr3.1.1a Use art vocabulary to describe choices while creating art.

VA:Cr1.2.1a Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

Given basic instructions for a series of design challenges, participants tried their hands at building their very own Junkyard Vehicles and Creeps, critical elements of the story. They then brought their creations to life with the help of a good old fashioned overhead projector.
